ZIARATE

Masjid al-Sahlah

Masjid al-Sahlah is located about 2 kilometers northwest of Masjid al-Kufah and was built by Arab tribes during the first century of hijrah. Some say it has been named after builder named Saheel. The masjid was built on the land where the Abdul Qays and Bani Zafar is a branch of this tribe. Therefore it is also referred to as Masjid as-Saheel, Bani Zafar and Abdul Qays. Ibn al-Fiqh narrates that Imam Ali (a) said ''There are four places in Kufah where the four Masajaid have been built.'' When asked about those four masaajid the Imam (a) replied ''One of them is the Masjid of Zafar or Masjid al-Sahlah.''

The Virtues of Masjid al-Sahlah

After Masjid al-Haram, Masjid al-Nabi and Masjid al-Kufah there is no other masjid as virtious as Masjid al-Sahlah. Imam Sadiq (a) narrates the virtues:

1) It contains the house of Prophet Idris (a), Prophet Ibrahim (a) and Hadrat Khidr (a).

2) Imam az-Zaman (Imam of our time) aj will live here with his family.

3) All 124,000 Prophets have prayed in this Masjid.

4) Residing in this masjid is like residing in the tent of Noble Prophet (s)

5) Whoever sincerely recites du'a in this masjid will recieve his/her anwser.

Then Imam Sadiq (a) said ''If I were closer to this masjid, I would perform all my prayers in it. The virtues of this masjid are far greater than what I have told you.'' Abu Basir replied ''May my life be sacrificed be sacrificed for you! Will Imam az-Zaman (aj) always reside in this masjid?'' The Imam (a) anwsered ''Yes. This masjid is among those places where Allah likes to be worshipped.''

According to Imam Sadiq (a) ''There is is not a day or night that passes by where angels are not worshipping in this masjid'' Additionaly, many of the 'Ulema have met Imam al-Mahdi in this masjid. It is a tradition of the Prophets and Imams to offer a two raka'at prayer in Masjid al-Sahlah between Maghrib and Isha prayers. It has been narrated by Imam Sadiq (a) that if anyone who is grieved performs such a prayer and then makes du'a, Allah will remove his pain and sadness.

The Maqam of Imam Mahdi (aj)

Sahla Mosque, around Kufa, two kilometers northwest of the Great Mosque of Kufa, is the oldest place attributed to Baqiyatullah “may God bless him and grant him peace.” In the effective hadiths of the Imams of Light, Sahla Mosque was introduced as the personal residence of Imam Mahdi in the era of revelation. More than a century before the birth of Imam Al-Hujjah, Imam Sadiq said, addressing his devoted friend Abu Basir: But it is the home of our friend if he stays with his family. Abu Basir offered: Will that imam’s permanent home be in Sahlah Mosque? He said yes. One day, in the presence of Imam Al-Sadiq, a conversation took place in the Sahla Mosque. They said: But this is the house of our companions if we stand with them. He owns our place there when he stays with his family.

In some sources, instead of “he rose,” it was made “qadam” meaning when he arrives.

Allama Tabatabai is the author of the book “Tafsir Al-Mizan”. (He died on Muharram 18, 1402 AH) Quoting his late teacher, Agha Sayyid Ali Qazi, that some people in our time, of course, have reached Imam Mahdi. Among them is Hajj Sheikh Muhammad Taqi Amiliyah, who was praying and reciting in the Sahla Mosque in the place of that imam, known as the Sahib al-Zaman, when he suddenly saw that imam in the middle of a very strong man. The light that will approach him, the majesty of that light will take him closer to receiving the spirit, and his souls will be numbered, and he will swear by the glorious names of God that he is near and will not be afflicted.

Maqam of Masjid Al-Sahlah

Maqam Imam Sadiq (a)

Bashar Makari narrates one day I went tovisit Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (a) in Kufah. The Imam (a) who was eating dates said to me ''O Bashar! come closer and enjoy some dates too'' I replied ''Please, you enjoy. On my way here, I saw a scene that hurts my head and made me lose my appetite.'' However the Imam (a) insisted that I eat some dates, so I began eating too then the Imam (a) asked me ''What did you see while coming here that made you so upset?'' I said ''I saw that soldier of the Sultan were beating a  women and dragging her to prison. She was begging for help, but no one was helping her.''

The Imam asked ''Why were they hitting her?'' I said from people that she said, 'O Fatimah! May Allah curse those who oppressed you.'' When the Imam heard this he stopped eating and started crying so much that his blessed beard and handerkerchief became so much. Then he said to me ''O Bashar! Lets go to Masjid al-Sahlah and pray to Allah for the release of that women.'' As we headed towards the Masjid, some Shi'ah were also going to Dar al-Khilafah to see what would happen to that women. When we reached Masjid each one of us offered a two raka'at of prayer in the corner. Afterwards Imam Sadiq raised his hands and recited this du'a ''You are Allah; there is no god except you. You initiated creation and will ressurect them..' Then Imam (a) went into sujud and recited a dhikr that I could not hear. Then, he lifted his head and said ''Get up! The women has just been released.''

We came out of the Masjid and came across someone who was returning from Dar al-Khilafah the Imam (a) asked him ''What is the news of the women?'' The man replied ''She was released'' The Imam (a) asked him ''Why did they release her?'' He replied ''I didn't understand, but I was standing at the door of Dar al-Khilafah when a guard came out and asked the women ''What did you say?''. The women replied 'I said, O Fatimah! May Allah curse those who oppressed you!'' The Sultan ordered the guard to give her 200 dirhams and ask him for forgiveness.

The women refused to take the money. When the gaurd saw this, he went back to Dar al-Khilafah. After some time he came out and toldthe women that was free and couldgo home, so the women returned to her home.'' Imam Sadiq (a) asked ''The women refusedto take the 200 dirhams from him?'' The man replied ''Yes, by Allah even though she was in need of that money.'' The Imam (a) handed meseven dirhams fromhis pocket and said ''Go to her home and convey my salam to her, and give her this money too.''

So we went to her home and conveyed the Imam's (a) salam to her. The women replied ''I ask you by Allah, did the Imam (a) really send his salam upon me?'' I replied ''I swear by Allah, Imam Sadiq (a) sent his salam to you.'' At this time, she gasped and fainted. We waited for her to regain consciousness. She then said ''What did you say? Can you repeat it?'' We repeated the message three times and then gave her the money and told her that the Imam (a) sent it for her. The women took the money and said ''Please ask the Imam to ask Allah to forgive my sins. There is no better intercessor than him and his grandfathers!'' When I returned to Imam Sadiq (a) and told him what happened, the Imam made du'a for her while crying.

Sayyid bin Tawus said ''Go to Masjid al-Sahlah on Tuesday night because it is better than any other time. After reciting Maghrib prayers and its nawafil, go to the middle of the masjid (Maqam Imam Sadiq (a) and offer two raka'at prayer with the intention of Tahiyyat al-Masjid. Then offer two raka'at prayer with the intention of Maqam al-Sadiq (a).
